Everybody needs a presence on the Internet, and once you're there it's just a short step up to having a site on the World Wide Web. Why settle for just e-mail and browsing other people's pages? Web sites can be plain or fancy, large or small. The beauty is that unlike a paper publication, your site can be updated regularly without throwing away your earlier version. You can add to and enlarge your site in easy stages, starting with a single page and ending up with... well, the sky (given enough web space!) is the limit.

Whatever sort of site you want, though, it's important to make sure that it's quick to load onto your visitors' computers and if you want a wide audience, it needs to be friendly to people with older hardware and software who don't want to (or can't) download pictures. Or people who have to use a speech synthesiser to read your pages. (Have a look at a demonstration home page . It's fun, but not very practical - not to mention overcrowded. Try looking at it with images turned off!)
